Starter Pokémon in Pokémon X and Y

In Pokémon X and Y, trainers are once again given the opportunity to choose one of three Starter Pokémon to begin their journey in the Kalos Region. As with previous generations, these three starters represent different elemental types: Grass, Fire, and Water. However, there are some notable differences in how these Pokémon are obtained in X and Y compared to earlier games.

Obtaining Your Starter Pokémon

Unlike previous Pokémon games, where the local Professor directly gives you your Starter, in X and Y, Professor Sycamore hands the three starters to your rivals. You will receive your chosen Starter in Aquacorde Town. After defeating the Pokémon League Champion, Shauna will present you with the starter that is weak to your own, allowing you to complete your team.

The Three Starter Pokémon

  1. Chespin – Grass-type
    • Evolution: Chespin evolves into Quilladin at level 16, and then into Chesnaught at level 36 (Grass/Fighting type).
    • Best Stats: Chesnaught excels in Defense, followed by Attack and HP. It’s particularly strong against physical damage and is the best choice if you prefer a more defensive strategy.
    • Playstyle: Though it’s not an all-out defensive Pokémon, its ability to withstand damage makes it a solid choice for tougher battles.
  2. Fennekin – Fire-type
    • Evolution: Fennekin evolves into Braixen at level 16, and into Delphox (Fire/Psychic type) at level 36.
    • Best Stats: Fennekin’s strength lies in its Special Attack and Speed, allowing it to hit hard and fast. Its Special Defense is also quite strong, helping it to survive longer in battles.
    • Playstyle: Delphox is a versatile and offensive Pokémon, making it ideal for players who want a fast, powerful attacker.
  3. Froakie – Water-type
    • Evolution: Froakie evolves into Frogadier at level 16, and into Greninja (Water/Dark type) at level 36.
    • Best Stats: Froakie specializes in Speed, followed by Special Attack. While its defensive stats are the weakest, its ability to strike quickly makes it an excellent choice for fast-paced combat.
    • Playstyle: Greninja is best suited for players who prefer a hit-and-run style of play, relying on speed and powerful special moves to outmaneuver opponents.

Kanto Starters

Once you obtain your first Gym Badge and visit Professor Sycamore’s lab in Lumiose City, you’ll have the chance to choose another Starter Pokémon from the Kanto Region: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle.

  • Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison) specializes in Special Defense and Special Attack.
  • Charmander (Fire) excels in Special Attack and Speed.
  • Squirtle (Water) has strong Defense and Special Defense.

Additionally, Professor Sycamore will give you a Mega Stone for the Pokémon you choose, enabling them to Mega Evolve once they reach their final evolutionary stage.

Summary

Each of the Kalos Starters—Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—offers a unique combination of strengths and weaknesses, allowing players to select a Pokémon that best suits their preferred playstyle. Whether you prioritize defense, speed, or offensive power, Pokémon X and Y provide a range of options for trainers embarking on their adventure in the Kalos Region.
